Telegram lets users hide their account when forwarded and restrict who can find them by phone or ID. The @doublegram_lookup_bot Telegram bot cannot bypass these settings — it only returns what Telegram's APIs allow.
Privacy-protected forward
When someone forwards a message from a user who enabled privacy for forwards, Telegram replaces the user link with a plain name. Lookup responds with:
- Type: User (Privacy Protected)
- Name: the display name Telegram still shows
- Username: Hidden for privacy
No numeric ID is available in this case — Telegram does not send it to the bot.
Searching by ID or username
When you search a user who restricts discovery:
- By numeric ID — Lookup may return: Cannot access this user's information with hints about strict privacy or invalid ID
- By @username — Works only if the user still has a public username. Privacy settings do not remove a public @handle
Lookup suggests trying @username when ID lookup fails for privacy reasons.
What may still be visible
| Situation | Often available | Usually hidden |
|---|---|---|
| Hidden forward | Display name | ID, username, bio |
| Public @username | ID, name, username, bio (if set) | Phone, exact location |
| ID search, privacy on | Error or partial data | Full profile |
Not a Lookup bug: If Telegram hides the user in the forward header, no bot can legally expose their ID without Telegram providing it.
Practical tips
- Check if the same person posted a public @username elsewhere in the chat
- Look for channel posts (forward_from_chat) instead of user forwards when investigating sources
- Use public channel/group lookups when the content came from a named channel
Free plan note
Privacy-protected forwards still consume one free lookup because Lookup processed your request and returned the privacy-limited answer.
Quick reference
- Hidden forward → name only
- ID lookup → may fail with privacy error
- Public @username → best chance for full user card
